Safe Security Services: a Magento store built from scratch in 2013, still running today

Full Magento build, custom module development, and ongoing maintenance for a UK physical security retailer. Active partnership from 2013 to the present day.

The engagement

I built the Safe Security Services ecommerce store from scratch in 2013, and I am still the developer behind it today. That is over twelve years of a single Magento codebase in continuous production use, selling safes, locks, and physical security products to UK businesses and consumers.

The work started as a full build: platform selection, architecture, theme, catalogue structure, and everything else that comes with launching a store. It has never really stopped. Safe Security Services has been on my desk every year since, in some form.

What a full build actually means

"Full build" is worth unpacking, because it covers a lot of ground. At the start of the engagement the site did not exist. By the time it launched it had:

  • A complete Magento installation, configured and deployed to production
  • A custom theme built around the business's catalogue and the way their customers browse physical security products
  • Catalogue architecture suited to a specialist product range: safes, graded products, approved brands, extended warranty logic
  • Payment and shipping integrations wired in and tested
  • Admin workflows set up for the operations team

That is the baseline a long partnership is built on. What comes after is everything else.

Twelve years of active development

A store that has been live since 2013 has seen a lot of change. The Magento platform itself has moved through major versions. PHP has moved through multiple releases. Third-party extensions come and go. Browsers and devices change what customers expect. Payment providers deprecate APIs.

Staying current across all of that is the actual work of a long Magento engagement:

  • Platform and PHP upgrades. Keeping Magento and its dependencies current is not optional for a store that processes payments. Upgrades are scheduled around quieter trading periods, tested properly, and deployed without drama.
  • Custom module development. Where Magento's built-in functionality or the extension marketplace did not fit the business, I built purpose-fit modules. Extended warranty handling, product grading display, and catalogue-specific logic are the kinds of things that do not ship in any off-the-shelf extension.
  • Security patches. Physical security is a domain where the merchant understands risk. Security patches land promptly, changes are reviewed before they go to production, and the admin surface stays locked down.
  • Ongoing maintenance. The unglamorous work that keeps a store healthy: indexer management, cache strategy, cron reliability, and the steady stream of small fixes and improvements that come with running a live ecommerce site.

Why this engagement has lasted

Safe Security Services is a specialist retailer with deep product knowledge and a customer base that values expertise. The Magento platform is a good fit for a catalogue of that complexity, and a long developer relationship is a good fit for a platform that rewards continuity.

After twelve years I know the codebase, the catalogue conventions, and how the business operates. When something changes, whether that is a supplier relationship, a new product category, or a platform security advisory, the path from "we need to change something" to "it is live" is short. There is no ramp-up, no knowledge transfer, no explaining how the custom modules work.

That is what a partnership of this length is worth.

What the store does today

safesecurityservices.co.uk is a live, active Magento store. It sells ChubbSafes, Burton, and other approved brands alongside graded and certified products with extended warranty options. The extended warranty logic, the graded product display, and the catalogue organisation all reflect years of iteration around the way the business and its customers actually work.

The site is still mine to maintain. That is where this engagement stands.

If you are running a Magento store and want a developer with the kind of platform depth that only comes from years in the same codebase, get in touch.
